MUSIC


ZERO PERIOD MUSIC

Zero Period Music is a full year elective open to all students though it targets sixth graders. It includes players of all levels, including beginners with a desire to learn an instrument. Classes include a rapid review of instrument performance fundamentals and note reading followed by ensemble playing in preparation for school concerts. No weekend or after school rehearsals are required. Classes are held from 7:15 – 8:00 A.M. Mondays & Wednesdays are for all strings (violin, viola, cello, bass). Tuesdays & Thursdays are for Band (flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, drums and percussion). Fridays – may be all students or specific groups based on needs and schedule. School credit is given but this class does not take away an elective choice since it is before school.

LOW STRINGS

The class includes development of proper string technique, small ensemble playing and concert repertoire. Low strings are combined with the Violin class to perform as a string orchestra and with violins, winds and percussion to perform as the Symphony Orchestra.  NOTE:  this class is for viola, cello, and bass players.

VIOLIN CLASS

The class includes development of proper violin technique, small ensemble playing and concert repertoire. The violin class is combined with the low strings to perform as a string orchestra and with low strings, winds and percussion to perform as the Symphony Orchestra.

WOODWIND CLASS

The class includes development of proper wind technique, small ensemble playing and concert repertoire. The woodwind class is combined with the brass/percussion class to perform as Marching Band (trimester one) and Symphonic Band (trimesters two & three). NOTE 1: this class if for woodwind players, which includes; flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon.  NOTE 2: auxiliary (drill/flag) members may choose this full year elective or the 2nd/3rd Trimester.

BRASS/PERCUSSION CLASS

The class includes development of proper brass and percussion technique, small ensemble playing and concert repertoire. The brass/percussion class is combined with the woodwind class to perform as Marching Band (trimester one) and Symphonic Band (trimesters two & three).  NOTE 1: this class is for brass and percussion players, which includes; trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, drums, and percussion.  NOTE 2: auxiliary (drill/flag) members may choose this full year elective or the 2nd/3rd Trimester elective.

BEGINNING ROCK BAND

Open to beginning students interested in learning rock vocals, rock guitar, rock bass, keyboards, or rock drum set. No experience is necessary. Class includes developing proper technique, note and tab reading and the performance of standard rock repertoire. Guitar and bass players should plan to provide their own instrument although some school instruments are available on a very limited basis. This class may be taken for one or two trimesters.  Surveys/Interviews will take place in June for acceptance/placement.

ADVANCED ROCK BAND
Open to medium and advanced students interested in applying and furthering their skills as rock vocalists, rock guitarists, rock bassists, keyboard players, or rock drummers. Students must have command of rock fundamentals including proper technique, note/tab reading, and basic patterns and grooves. Classes will focus on forming and rehearsing a band, issues of sound and balance, and performance of more challenging rock repertoire. Guitar and bass players should plan to provide their own instrument although some school instruments are available on a very limited basis.

CHORUS

Chorus is for students interested in singing. No experience is necessary. Class includes developing proper vocal technique, note reading and the performance of vocal repertoire in various styles.
