The First Avenue Counselors, Ms. Martin, Ms. Grumbine, and Ms. Polidano, work to assist FA students and families as they make the middle school journey. Working closely with the administrative team, teachers, students and parents, the counselors monitor and intervene on behalf of at-risk students and bring resources to bear for parents and guardians struggling with academic, personal, and social issues that seem most prevalent during these years. Ms. Martin, Ms. Grumbine, and Ms. Polidano collaborate with the Student Study Team, Grade Level Teams, AVID Site Team, and other student/school support teams to identify student needs and engage in problem solving to address these needs. The counselors use the National Standards for School Counseling as a blueprint for providing comprehensive guidance services. The National Standards comprise three domains: Personal/Social, Academic, and College/Career. The counselors assist students by providing support and guidance to improve school performance. A counselor is available on a daily basis to discuss personal concerns with students and parents. The counselors also assist students and their parents with educational planning so that students have an appropriate secondary education and are gaining knowledge and skills to prepare them for a successful graduation from high school. The counselors help students in selecting coursework that supports their post-secondary choices; both educational and vocational. The counselors also provide information and guidance pertaining to high school graduation requirements, skills needed for school success, the various post-secondary options, and college entrance requirements. Career planning for all students is conducted through guidance lessons pertaining to career interest inventories and information about the world of work. The counselors look forward to working with the students and parents of FA.
